Thunderstorm 《雷雨》 is a play by the renowned chinese playwright, Tsao Yu (曹禹). Tsao Yu also known as the “Chinese Shakespeare” and he is remarkable for his works such as Sunrise《日出》,The Wilderness 《原野》, The Metamorphosis 《蜕变》and Thunderstorm nonetheless.
Malaysia theatre First Lady, Dato’ Faridah Merican has took on the challenge to direct Tsao Yu’s awe-inspiring masterpiece, Thunderstorm and indeed, it is a piece that all of us, the Malaysian should keep an eye on. It would be more exciting to see a translated version of the Chinese classic would look like.
Thunderstorm is a play that talks about the tragedy of the wealthy and modern Westernized Zhou family with their ironically traditional mindset along with hypocrisy between the family members. The family members weren’t happy at all with all the oppression and catastrophe. The family seems — chaotic. Somehow, we can relate this to our society nowadays.
Nevertheless, the casts of the play is simply,strong. Furthermore it is directed by the experienced director, Dato’ Faridah Merican, assisted by Freddy Tan.
