Singapore Chinese Opera Museum presents
Piano With Beijing Opera “The Red Lantern” Appreciation Concert

Piano With Beijing Opera “The Red Lantern” Appreciation Concert is a music event organised by a group of Chinese immigrants under the auspices of the Singapore Chinese Opera Museum. It celebrates the diversity of Chinese opera and music, not to mention sharing their heritage and culture with Singaporeans.
One of the important milestones in Chinese history is none other than the event that saw piano accompaniment to The Red Lantern, a production created during the Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1968.
It was a year ago from 1968 that a 27-year old pianist Yin Cheng Zong (His uncle-in-law was the well-known local merchant Lim Boon Keng) – in the fateful days of 11, 12 and 13 May 1967 – moved the piano to the Tiananmen Square and played Chinese songs and excerpts of the Beijing Opera. It was well received by the Chinese people. Right after, he found musicians Liu Chang Yu and Qian Hao Liang to initiate new experiments on the form: piano accompaniment to the Chinese songs with Beijing Opera. This act has totally re-invented a new path to Chinese songs and Beijing Opera presentation in China.
On 1 July 1968, as a gift to the Communist Party, the Central Chinese Orchestra broadcast their version of the piano accompaniment of The Red Lantern. The whole concert was presented in the attendance of important Chinese political figures: Mao Zedong, Lin Biao, Zhou Enlai and Jiang Qing.
Coming March, 14th, Sunday, at 8pm, Singapore’s Chinese immigrant artists will present the piano accompaniment of The Red Lantern, at the Lee Foundation Theatre, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
