“When shall we three meet again in thunder, lightning, or in rain? When the hurlyburly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won”. – Macbeth (Act I , Scene I)
Macbeth is a famous play by the distinguished playwright William Shakespeare. Back in 1606, Macbeth was used as a “tool” to criticize the political “lore” who sought for power and authority, and yet indirectly “constructed” a nation’s destruction.
Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis is a general who serves under the vainglorious Lord Duncan. One day, he receives a prophecy from the three witches claiming that he will be the next King of Scotland. At first, Macbeth does not take it seriously but eventually he yields upon his wife’s persuasion and kills Lord Duncan claiming the throne for himself. Because of guilt, he suffers from paranoia and has to commit even more killings to protect power. Macbeth becomes a gruesome murderer and a tyrannical ruler, killing whoever that tries to stop him. In the end, he is killed by Macduff and there goes the tyranny of the cruel Macbeth.
Shakespeare Demystified: Macbeth takes on the challenge using only 5 actors playing more than 20 roles, with the aids of simple setting, lighting and live music. The production focuses on the actors’ acting skills and also audience’s imagination to liven up Shakespeare’s words. Indeed a very unique combination that attracts the audiences and leads the audiences to actually commit themselves to the play.
Shakespeare Demystified: Macbeth is the seventh production under the Shakespeare Demystified (SD) series after The Merchant of Venice, Othello, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and etc. The series uses simple and contemporary English to allow the young audiences to understand the ‘Bard’ hence it will be interesting to watch.
