Malaysia’s design community is in for a treat on Thursday, May 11, when Kuala Lumpur’s landmark PAM Centre will be the first city in Southeast Asia to host Taiwan’s successful Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon series. The Salon comes to Kuala Lumpur after two years touring 18 cities in the Greater China region.
The Salon in Kuala Lumpur is hosted by the Golden Pin Design Award, which is currently calling for entries for its 2017 edition (more information here: http://www.goldenpin.org.tw/en/pgpnyg1.asp), and the Taiwan Design Center, alongside executive organisers DDG Taipei and Kuala Lumpur’s own Tsubaki Studio.
Three distinguished designers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia have been invited on stage to share their thoughts on the application of culture in design and designing for and within Chinese-speaking communities.
Harald-Wong has won numerous honours for his work from prestigious organisations including Design for Asia Award (Hong Kong), Designomics Leadership Award (India), International Design Achievement Award (China), and DDEC Malaysia.
Kristof Crolla combines his architectural practice, Laboratory for Explorative Architecture (LEAD), with an Assistant Professorship in Computational Design at the School of Architecture – The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Golden Moon, a temporary architectural installation created by Crolla and his team at LEAD as a centrepiece for Hong Kong’s 2012 Mid-Autumn Festival Lantern Wonderland, took home a Golden Pin Design Award Best Design trophy in 2014.
Rock Wang is a university educator and chief designer at Qiao Design Studios in Taiwan. He has led design teams at leading brands like Do Design, Zoe Design, The One, tittot, and Lin’s Ceramic Studio, and was the first designer from Greater China to be collected by Droog Design in Germany.
Audience members are encouraged to arrive for registration at the PAM Auditorium (2nd floor) anytime after 6pm on May 11. The first 50 people to register at the event will receive a welcome pack that includes a copy of the Golden Pin Design Award 2016 Best Design book, event supporter materials, and a free copy of the Tsubaki-published CUTOUT magazine. Light refreshments will be served at a rooftop reception (8th floor) from 6pm until the event begins at 7pm.

During 2015 and 2016, the Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon series toured 18 cities in the Greater China region–from Shanghai to Qingdao, Hong Kong to Taipei–providing designers, business owners, and design enthusiasts with access to some of the region’s most celebrated design professionals. To date, nearly 80 speakers have taken to the Salon stage to share their work and ideas.
The series supports the remit of Perspectives (http://designperspectives.org/), an online archive of discussions around the topic of Chinese-inspired design and design for and within Chinese-speaking communities. Like the Salon series, the archive is also sponsored by the Golden Pin Design Award.
